Pediatric Dentist in Thousand Oaks: A Parent's Guide to Your Child's First Visits and Beyond

When should your child first see a dentist, and how do you make it a good experience? This guide walks Thousand Oaks parents through first visits, preparing nervous kids, pediatric services, and what to do in a dental emergency, with an in-house pediatric dentist at Smiles4Life.

Choosing a dentist for your child is a different decision than choosing one for yourself. You want someone who knows how young teeth grow, who can spot small problems before they turn into big ones, and who can make a four-year-old feel safe in the chair. That last part matters more than most parents expect. A child who has a good first visit usually grows into a teen and adult who keeps showing up for checkups.

At Smiles4Life in Thousand Oaks, children are seen by an in-house pediatric dentist, in the same office where the rest of your family can see our general dentist, orthodontist, periodontist, and endodontist. This guide covers when your child should first see a dentist, what the visit looks like, how to prepare, and what to do if your child is nervous. We care for families from Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Newbury Park, Agoura Hills, and Oak Park.

What Does a Pediatric Dentist Do?

A pediatric dentist is a dentist who completes two to three extra years of specialty training after dental school, focused only on children. That training covers how teeth and jaws develop from infancy through the teen years, how to treat baby teeth that are shaped differently from adult teeth, and how to care for children who feel anxious or who have special healthcare needs.

Baby teeth may fall out, but they still do important work. They help your child chew, speak clearly, and smile with confidence, and they hold space for the adult teeth underneath. When a baby tooth is lost too early to decay, nearby teeth can drift into the gap and crowd the adult tooth trying to come in. Caring for baby teeth well sets up a healthier adult smile.

When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association both recommend a first dental visit by your child's first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in, whichever comes first. Many parents are surprised by how early that is. The goal of an early visit is not treatment. It is to check that teeth are coming in normally, catch early signs of decay, and give you practical advice on brushing, teething, bottles, and thumb sucking.

If your child is older and has never been to the dentist, that is okay. It is never too late to start, and there is no judgment. We simply meet your child where they are.

What Happens at Your Child's First Visit at Smiles4Life?

First visits are short, relaxed, and built around your child's comfort. Here is what to expect:

  1. A friendly welcome. We take a few minutes to say hello, show your child the chair, and let them see and touch some of the tools before anything goes in their mouth.
  2. A gentle exam. During a children's dental exam, Dr. Ferrin checks the teeth, gums, bite, and jaw growth. For very young children, this is often done knee to knee, with your child lying back in your lap.
  3. A light cleaning. When your child is ready, a children's teeth cleaning removes plaque and tartar and may include a protective fluoride treatment.
  4. X-rays only when needed. We take digital X-rays based on your child's age and risk, not on a fixed schedule.
  5. Time for your questions. We finish by talking with you about home care, diet, and anything we noticed, so you leave with a clear plan.

How Can I Prepare My Child for the Dentist?

A little preparation at home goes a long way. These simple steps help most kids walk in feeling calm:

  • Read a picture book or watch a short video about visiting the dentist together.
  • Play dentist at home by counting each other's teeth with a toothbrush.
  • Use simple, positive words like "count your teeth" and "make them shiny," and skip words like "hurt," "shot," or "drill."
  • Try not to share your own stressful dental stories before the visit.
  • Book a morning appointment, when younger children tend to be rested and in a good mood.
  • Bring a favorite stuffed animal or blanket for comfort.

Pediatric Dental Services at Smiles4Life

Most of what we do for kids is prevention. When treatment is needed, we keep it gentle and explain each step in words your child understands. Our pediatric services include:

What If My Child Is Nervous at the Dentist?

Nervous kids are normal, and our team sees them every day. Dr. Ferrin uses a calm, playful approach called "tell, show, do." He tells your child what is going to happen, shows them the tool, and only then does the step. Knowing what comes next takes away much of the fear.

For children who need a filling or crown and still feel worried, we offer laughing gas, also called nitrous oxide. Your child breathes it through a small nose mask, feels relaxed and a bit giggly, and stays awake the whole time. The effects wear off within minutes after the mask comes off, so most kids can go right back to their day. You can learn more on our sedation dentistry page.

Can My Child See an Orthodontist at the Same Office?

Yes. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check around age 7, when the first adult molars and front teeth have come in. At this age, an orthodontist can spot bite and jaw issues while the jaw is still growing, which can sometimes make later treatment simpler.

Because our orthodontist, Dr. Jeffrey Nagel, practices in the same Thousand Oaks office, Dr. Ferrin can walk down the hall instead of writing a referral. If your child needs early orthodontic treatment, a palatal expander, or braces for children, it can all happen in one place. For kids who play sports, we also make custom sports guards to protect growing teeth.

Meet Dr. Matthew Ferrin, Our Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Matthew Ferrin earned his dental degree at the UCLA School of Dentistry and completed his pediatric dental residency through NYU Langone's hospital-based program, where he trained in caring for children of all ages, including children with special healthcare needs. He is fluent in Spanish and lives in Thousand Oaks with his wife and two sons.

He is known for a gentle chairside manner and for helping even very anxious kids feel at ease. He takes the time to earn your child's trust and partners with you on habits that last well past childhood.

What Should I Do in a Children's Dental Emergency?

Kids fall off bikes, take a ball to the face, and bite down on things they should not. If your child has a dental injury or sudden tooth pain, call us right away. We keep time open for same-day emergency visits. A few quick tips while you get in touch:

  • Knocked-out baby tooth: Do not try to put it back in, since that can harm the adult tooth underneath. Call us so we can check the area.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: Hold it by the top, not the root, rinse gently, and place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk. Get seen as soon as possible, because timing matters.
  • Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress on the outside of the face for swelling.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove anything stuck. Do not place aspirin on the gums.

If your child has a hard hit to the head, trouble breathing, or bleeding that will not stop, go to the nearest emergency room first.

Does Insurance Cover Pediatric Dental Care?

Most PPO dental plans cover preventive care for children, such as exams, cleanings, fluoride, and often sealants, at or near full cost, with fillings and crowns covered at a lower percentage. Every plan is different. Smiles4Life accepts most major PPO plans, and our front office will verify your benefits and give you a written estimate before any treatment begins. For costs your plan does not cover, we offer financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and Sunbit. You can check your insurance or review our financing options.
