Most people who come in asking about cosmetic dentistry arrive with a specific request already decided. They want veneers. Sometimes that is exactly right. Often the thing actually bothering them, the yellowing, the one chipped front tooth, the gumline that sits too low, has a simpler and less expensive fix that keeps more of their natural tooth intact. The best cosmetic consultation starts with what you want to change, not with a product.
At Smiles4Life in Thousand Oaks, cosmetic dentistry is led by Dr. Aaron Choroomi, our general and cosmetic dentist and co-founder of the practice, who has spent more than twenty years designing smiles that look like they belong to the person wearing them. This guide covers each option we offer, what it genuinely fixes, how long it lasts, and how to think about the decision if you live in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Newbury Park, Agoura Hills, or Oak Park.
What Counts as Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry covers any treatment whose primary goal is the appearance of your smile: the color, shape, size, alignment, and symmetry of your teeth, plus the gum tissue framing them. The line between cosmetic and restorative work is blurrier than most marketing suggests. A crown on a cracked molar is restorative. The same crown on a visibly discolored front tooth is both. That overlap is good news, because it means a well-planned cosmetic case usually improves how your teeth function too.
It also means the honest answer to some cosmetic requests is orthodontic. If crowding or a bite issue is what makes your smile look uneven, straightening the teeth first with Invisalign clear aligners often produces a better and more durable result than covering the problem with porcelain. Because we have an in-house orthodontist, that conversation happens in one office rather than becoming a referral you never follow up on.
Teeth Whitening: The Right Starting Point for Most People
If your teeth are healthy, well-aligned, and simply darker than you would like, whitening is the least invasive and least expensive place to start. Professional whitening uses stronger peroxide gels than anything sold over the counter, with the soft tissue protected and the strength matched to your sensitivity. Results typically last from several months to a couple of years depending on coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco.
Two things worth knowing before you spend money. First, whitening lightens natural enamel only. It does not change the color of existing crowns, bonding, or veneers, which is why any cosmetic work should be planned after you have reached the shade you want. Second, whitening cannot correct deep intrinsic staining from trauma, tetracycline, or a tooth that has had a root canal. Those cases need bonding or a veneer instead. The American Dental Association's overview of whitening explains the difference between surface and internal stains in more detail.
What Are Veneers, and Who Are They Actually For?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of your teeth. They change color, shape, length, and the appearance of small gaps all at once, which is why they are the go-to for a comprehensive change. Porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel, and with good care veneers commonly last ten to fifteen years, often longer, before they need replacing.
The trade-off is that traditional veneers require removing a small amount of enamel so the shell sits flush rather than bulky. That step is not reversible, which is exactly why the planning matters as much as the porcelain. Veneers make the most sense when several things bother you at once: color that will not respond to whitening, worn or chipped edges, teeth that are short or uneven, or small gaps you do not want to close with orthodontics.
Lumineers: A No-Prep Alternative
For the right teeth, Lumineers are ultra-thin and can often be bonded with little or no enamel reduction. They suit patients whose teeth are already reasonably well-shaped and not significantly dark, and they appeal to anyone uneasy about permanently altering enamel. They are less effective at masking heavily stained teeth, because a thinner shell hides less. During your consultation we will say plainly which of the two your teeth are better suited to rather than selling the thinner option as universally better.
Anti-Aging Veneers
Teeth flatten and shorten with decades of wear, and shorter teeth make the lower face look collapsed in a way people usually blame on their skin. Anti-aging veneers restore the tooth length and fullness that has been lost, which supports the lips and softens the shadows around the mouth. It is one of the few cosmetic treatments that changes how rested someone looks, not just how white their teeth are.
Smaller Fixes That Solve More Than People Expect
Not every concern needs porcelain. These options are faster, cheaper, and often the smarter first move:
- Dental bonding sculpts tooth-colored composite onto a chipped corner, a worn edge, or a small gap, usually in a single visit and with no lab work.
- Cosmetic gum contouring reshapes a gumline that sits too low or unevenly, which is the actual fix for a gummy smile or for teeth that look short when the teeth themselves are fine.
- Tooth-colored fillings replace old silver amalgam that shows when you laugh, with no visible metal line.
- Same-day dental crowns rebuild a badly damaged tooth in one appointment, matched to your surrounding shade.
A single well-placed bonding on one front tooth has resolved more smile complaints in our office than any expensive treatment plan. If that is all you need, we will tell you so.
What Is a Smile Makeover?
A smile makeover is not a single procedure. It is a coordinated plan that may combine whitening, veneers, bonding, gum contouring, crowns, and sometimes orthodontics or implants, sequenced so each step supports the next. The planning is what separates a result that looks natural from one that announces itself across a room.
Design decisions we work through with you include tooth proportion relative to your face, how much tooth shows when you speak and smile, the shape of the edges, how the midline sits against your features, and a shade that reads bright rather than artificial. Because our Thousand Oaks office has a periodontist, orthodontist, and endodontist in-house, a complex makeover does not turn into a scheduling project across three practices.
How Long Do Cosmetic Results Last?
- Professional whitening: several months to two years, extended by touch-ups and by limiting staining drinks
- Dental bonding: roughly five to seven years, and it can stain or chip, but it is easy to repair
- Porcelain veneers and Lumineers: commonly ten to fifteen years or more with good hygiene
- Gum contouring: typically permanent once the tissue has healed
Two habits shorten the life of cosmetic work more than anything else: skipping cleanings, and grinding your teeth at night. If you clench or grind, a custom night guard protects your investment, and we will recommend one as part of the plan rather than after something cracks.
Does Insurance Cover Cosmetic Dentistry?
Purely elective cosmetic work such as whitening or veneers placed for appearance alone is generally not covered by dental insurance. Where treatment is also restoring function or protecting a damaged tooth, a crown on a fractured tooth or a filling replacing failing amalgam, part of the cost is often covered. Our front office reviews your plan first and shows you which portions of a proposed plan may qualify, so the estimate you approve reflects reality. For the rest, we offer financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and Sunbit, which lets most patients spread cosmetic treatment over monthly payments. Review your insurance benefits or our financing options before your consultation.
